‘TAPIOPLAST®, Turning Waste to Sustainable World’ Project 2023

1 June 2023, SMS first launched the TAPIOPLAST® for Soil Amendments project with local communities, encouraging the communities to act on sustainable plastic waste management. Since reducing plastic and food waste is one of the SDGs, the company intently aimed to reduce 50% of waste in nearby communities by 2030.

There were more than 30 local restaurants joining the campaign. The project is focused on the management of organic waste left after cooking and food consumption. Bio-degradable garbage bags from TAPIOPLAST® were given to all restaurants for organic waste separation and placed in the ground pit for natural degradation.

The project is continually underway for 12 months and has SMS staff and local communities monitoring the waste daily. The ultimate goal is to maximize the value of every resource and minimize waste as much as possible. TAPIOPLAST® is a functional bioplastic resin derived from natural cassava, which is bio-based raw material. After burring the biodegradable garbage bags from TAPIOPLAST® in the compost pit, they will naturally be 100% compostable by microorganisms under proper temperature and moisture content and eventually decompose back to soil amendment for further plantation usability.

Utilizing the resources at every step in the circle without waste makes the one-loop cycle for the BCG model (Bio-Circular-Economy). This is the utmost positive impact that will drive our communities forward to environmental sustainability.

What’s more to emphasize sustainable product innovation, SMS introduced the plant-protein-based menus by PHYTO 50 as an appetizer at the event. PHYTO 50 is a pea-based ingredient to enrich protein content in various food cuisines. It is a meat substitute with great taste and texture, which takes less natural resources than livestock production.
